Prior to joining RTS in 2021, he ran his own strength coaching business, the HJP Method.

In 2017, Hayden graduated with his PhD from the Auckland University of Technology (AUT). His thesis was titled "Tapering Strategies to Enhance Maximal Strength", which investigated how to best structure the taper period to improve strength performance and attempted to identify the mechanisms underlying any performance improvements. From 2013-2020 he was a Lecturer at UCOL in Palmerston North, where he taught numerous courses on the Bachelor of Exercise & Sports Science, and conducted research related to strength and power training.

Hayden takes an athlete-centric approach with his lifters, he believes you must know your athlete if you are to help them with their competitive aspirations. He has coached both novice and International level lifters, and regardless of level, enjoys the process of working together to improve a lifter’s performance.
